The Connie Boochever Fellowship gave Schatzie Schaefers the opportunity to seek professional mentorship in developing a new full length play for the stage. She worked with Bay Area dramaturg Jayne Wenger throughout the entire process of writing VASHON. Through regular emails, Skype chats, and a reading retreat held in San Francisco, Jayne gave Schatzie guidance in developing an initial outline and several drafts of the play itself. The next step was to see the play on its feet! Art Rotch invited her to bring VASHON to Perseverance Theatre for a workshop production in January. Schatzie Schaefers was able to attend all rehearsals and make changes daily to the script to polish the final product. The play was given four pay-what-you-can performances to nearly sold-out houses on Perseverance’s Second Stage. Schatzie is currently in the process of submitting the final script of VASHON to professional theatres all around the U.S.
